Holiday Fun at the Bingo Hall

December 29, 2005

Carlton Clubs, a national bingo chain, has banned member Michael O'Rourke from playing bingo in all of its establishments across Scotland and northern England. The reason: his excessively loud voice scares other players and irks bingo hall staffers.

Having played bingo every day for 20 years, O'Rourke, 46, is no stranger to the online bingo game. His intense involvement in the competitive nature of bingo reaches its zenith with his thunderous cries of "house". His excitement, however, spelled his end, as, in vociferous booms, he ended up swearing at fellow players in the bingo hall.

On the other end of the spectrum, East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, saw just a single player win £5,554 ($9,857.) The National Bingo Game Association released the list of winning towns based on an analysis of the number of bingo players with winnings over £10,000 ($17,747) as related to the number of clubs in the town.

O'Rourke is appealing to reverse the ban on bingo, claiming that players must play bingo loudly so as not to accidentally miss out on a win by not being heard. However, Carlton Clubs managing director, Peter Perrins, stood firm in his company's decision, saying that the ban was just in light of O'Rourke's unacceptable behavior.

Rankings from the UK's National Bingo Game are out, and the luckiest town is Stirling. With six big wins in a single club over the past year, and total bingo prizes of £471,266, ($836,402) Stirling's winnings were way ahead of the second place holder, Coatbridge. Coatbridge saw winnings of £411,185 ($729,770), also from a total of six players, at the County Bingo Club. Third on the list was Northampton, Scotland.
